5 February 2007: Patients and staff across Liverpool’s Walk-in Centres are set to benefit from improved operational efficiencies, following the implementation of an electronic patient record and nurse led consultation system.
The system, from Clinical Solutions, was previously installed at two of the city’s four Walk-in Centres to replace their paper-based records. Following improvements in patient data management, the system has now been implemented in the remaining two sites in the city, one of which is the first centre in the UK to focus on paediatric care.
The new solution will enable Liverpool PCT to transfer medical records onto a central database to be viewed and accessed by all four sites. The consistent and comprehensive patient data will enable staff to work at any of the city’s Walk-in Centres and adapt quickly to the patient records system. In addition it also provides clinical decision support for triage nurses.
The reporting aspect of the solution will provide the PCT with all the data it needs for auditing purposes in a fraction of the time spent to review paper records.
Caroline Rand, head of information, management and technology at Liverpool PCT explains, “We recognised the benefits of switching to an electronic system at the first two sites to both staff and patients. The expansion of the technology across all four Walk-in Centres improves the availability and speed of access of information enabling staff rotation. The decision support element provides a valuable resource for triage nursing staff and along with the electronic records will help us to reduce queuing time by directing patients to where they will be seen quickly.”
Richard Craven, sales & marketing director at Clinical Solutions adds, “Liverpool’s Walk-in Centres provide a lifeline for the people of the city as an alternative to A & E and GP surgeries. The expansion of the Clinical Solutions system across all four sites will reduce the burden placed on healthcare professionals in the region and in turn help provide better care for patients.”
The new system at the Walk-in Centre will be dual password protected and user access will be restricted to only the most relevant staff, to safeguard patient confidentiality.
